Description

The Green Grouse Project is located on the Darrington Ranger District of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest encompassing the area indicated on the Contract Area Map within South Fork Stillaguamish watershed near Granite Falls, Washington Restoration objectives for the project area are summarized as follows:

  • Enhance habitat conditions for old forest associated species in late-successional reserves with emphasis on nesting habitat for marbled murrelet and northern spotted owls.
  • Maintain and restore riparian vegetation composition and structural diversity, while protecting and enhancing fish habitat and aquatic organism passage. Contribute a supply of timber products to the public from the variable density stand thinning.
  • Manage infrastructure and facilities within the South Fork Stillaguamish watershed to support not only the goals of the late-successional reserve, but also meet Tribal and recreational use within the watershed and to support administrative management of Forest lands.

To accomplish these objectives, the contract includes the following components: variable density thinning, reconstruction of roads needed to access stands for thinning treatments followed by storing roads not needed for public access, invasive plant treatments along roads, decommissioning of temporary roads following timber harvest use, and road drainage and conditioning treatments.

Mandatory work item in these units 57B to 86D includes cutting and removal of an estimated 58,197 TONS of sawlogs (trees 8.0 inches DBH and greater) from the contract area. Refer to Volume Summary and Specifications in Attachment #1.

Mandatory work item in these units includes the road reconstruction and maintenance on the proposed haul route and on other unit roads deemed necessary for product removal.   

Contractor marking of leave trees will not be required prior to initiating operations.

Trees designated for removal in work item are identified using the Designation by Description prescription included in Appendix B.

Optional work items that may be ordered include treatment of invasive plants along roads within the contract area and road drainage and conditioning treatments on roads not used on the proposed haul route or deemed necessary for product removal.

(b) Resulting Contract – Any resultant contract will be a Construction contract with requirements for timber removal.

(c) Project Location – Project is in Township 31 North, Range 8 East, Sections 31, 31, and 32; Township 31 North, Range 8 East, Sections 3, 4, and 5, WM.

Location: Township 31 North, Range 8 East, Sections 31, 31, and 32; Township 31 North, Range 8 East, Sections 3, 4, and 5, WM. Starting in Granite Falls WA at the roundabout of the intersection of Hwy 92 (Granite Falls Hwy) and Quarry Rd. Exit onto Quarry Rd and pass through 2 additional roundabouts for 0.2 miles then turn left onto Mountain Loop Hwy. Travel 6.9 miles and bear left onto National Forest Service Road 41 / Green Mountain Rd. Follow road for 1.8 miles and bear right onto National Forest Service Road 4110 driving about an additional 0.3 miles and entering National Forest Land and the general project area.
